Prof. Rajagopal has been working for over 20 years in the field of biophysics and bioenergy and have published 95 research articles in reputed journals. He had 7 years of postdoctoral experience in different countries like: 1) Biological research center, Hungary, 2) University of Quebec at Trios-Rivieres, Canada and 3) Arizona State University, USA before he joined at University of Hyderabad.
    Prof. Rajagopal made significant contributions to the area of photosynthesis with emphasis on the bioenergetics and acclimation of chloroplasts. His group studied in detail the structural and organizational dynamics of photosystems (PS) and their light harvesting complexes (LHC) in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as well as Arabidopsis thaliana. He discovered that under fluctuating light, the LHCB2 subunit undergoes phosphorylation triggering dissociation of the entire LHCII from PS II and eventual migration to PSI, a phenomenon called state transitions (balancing energy transfer between PS II and PSI). Under temperature stress too, state transitions constituted an important protective strategy. He studied the influence of high light and iron deficiency on the organization of photosynthetic apparatus and proposed a structural model of PSI from C. reinhardtii. He demonstrated that C. reinhardtii acclimated to abiotic stress through non-photochemical quenching mediated by LHC stress-related proteins.   

Rajagopal employed biophysical, biochemical, molecular and bioinformatics tools, to detect the changes in photosystems. In addition, his lab used proteomics and metabolomics-based approaches to dissect the abiotic stress responsive signaling events in chloroplasts. His findings on physiological and molecular basis of abiotic stress acclimation could pave way for designing sustenance strategies of photosynthesis under limiting conditions.
