Prof Naresh Sepuri received his Ph.D. in 1997 from the University of Hyderabad in the area of Translational Regulation. Prof Sepuri carried out his post-doctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University, and Thomas Jefferson University before joining the University of Hyderabad as Associate Professor in 2007. During his post-doctoral studies, he focused on protein translocation into mitochondria, mitochondrial biogenesis, and mitochondrial protein homeostasis. Prof Sepuri was a recipient of the American Heart Association, the USA during his post-doctoral work. He has 22 years of experience in the field of mitochondrial biology, of which 11 years were in the USA. He has numerous peer-reviewed publications in high impact international journals including Science, Molecular Cell, Journal of Cell Biology, and EMBO. Prof Sepuri's publications have been cited more than 2500 times by his peers that includes more than 1000 citations from the papers published with the University of Hyderabad affiliation. So far, Prof Sepuri has generated grant worth of INR 4.0 cr through funding from Government Agencies like DBT, DST, CSIR, ICMR, UGC, and an industry grant. He has reviewed papers from journals like Human Molecular Genetics, BBA, JBC, Mitochondrion, Science Signaling, Science Translational Research, Traffic and is also a Reviewer of the NSF grant (USA) and SERB (India). 

    Our lab focuses on a multi-dimensional and multipronged approach to understand the importance of mitochondrial redox homeostasis in viral infection, aging, cellular proliferation, metabolism, pathogenesis, and retrograde signaling using yeast, mammalian cell lines, and animal models. We would like to identify the components of the mitochondria acting as 'redox switches' in response to various stress conditions. The other aspect that we are trying to understand is the involvement of 'redox switches' in mitophagy, autophagy, and mitochondrial biogenesis. In this direction, we identified a couple of factors GrpEL1, a co-chaperone of mitoHsp70, and MIA40, an intermembrane space receptor that regulates the mitochondria protein and redox homeostasis. We also identified STAT3, a nuclear transcription factor is localized in the mitochondria and regulates respiration independent of transcription. These studies yielded high impact publications, including Science (2009), Mol. Biol. Cell (2013 & 15), JBC (2013), Biochemistry (2016), Biochem.J (2015), FEBs Letts (2020), JVI (2020). Further, deepen understanding of these and additional factors would strengthen our research activities and have a broader potential to understand the redox metabolism and to combat various disorders associated with mitochondrial dysfunction.
