Professor Appa Rao Podile has over 33 years of teaching and research experience. He served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad and is currently a Senior Professor. He works in the area of molecular plant-microbe interactions, with a more recent focus on the soil and crop microbiome of legumes. His research group critically examines the chemical signals in plant-microbe interactions with special emphasis on chitooligosaccharides and root exudates. 

Professor Podile obtained his masters and doctoral degrees from Sardar Patel University, and secured the First Rank at the Masters.

Professor Podile is an elected Fellow of all major science academies of India, including Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi, National Academy of Sciences, Allahabad, Association of Microbiologists of India, New Delhi, and founding Fellow of Telangana Academy of Sciences, Hyderabad. Professor Podile served as President of the Association of Microbiologists of India.

A recipient of the prestigious J.C. Bose Fellowship from DST, the Tata Innovation Fellowship from DBT, the K.C. Mehta Memorial Award in Crop Protection from the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Rangaswami Award in Agricultural Microbiology from the Association of Microbiologists of India, the Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology and the Goyal Science Foundation’s Rajib Goyal Young Scientist Award in Agriculture. 

Professor Podile was a Fulbright Fellow in the Academic Leadership Seminar at Cornell.  He also served as the Chairman of the Southern Regional Centre of AICTE.

Prof. Podile has chaired/co-chaired important national-level task forces, program advisory committees, search-cum-selection committees, etc., besides being a member of research advisory councils of scientific institutes of ICAR, DST, and DBT. He was also on the board of Governors of IIM Trichy and AIUCAA Pune. Indian Science Congress Association has conferred the Millennium Plaque of Honour, and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, Faizabad, U.P. conferred an Honorary Doctor of Science on Prof Podile. 

A committed teacher, Prof Podile has guided 24 students towards their PhDs, besides 4 M.Phils. At present, 6 Ph.D. students and 1 Post-Doctoral Fellow work in his group. Most of his students are well-placed both in India and abroad, in higher educational institutions and/or research institutes and companies.

Currently, Prof Podile's lab is supported through a SERB grant and the J.C. Bose Fellowship from DST, with a major research grant in nanotechnology from DBT. Essential Qualifications

M.Sc. in Biotechnology/Microbiology/Plant Sciences from a recognized university (First Division) with research experience in relevant field for at least 2 years supported by publications in peer-reviewed international journals.

Research experience in molecular plant-microbe interactions

Experience

Minimum 2 years of experience in working with plant microbiomes and metagenomics with relevant publications (preferably first author) is required.

   Prof. Appa Rao Podile’s lab is engaged in research in the area of molecular plant-microbe interactions. His research group focuses on molecular interactions of rhizosphere bacteria with plants using metagenomic approaches, bioprocess development for production of chitooligosaccharides by enzymatic methods, nanotechnology for crop protection, etc.
