Faculty Details
We are working on allele mining of candidate R-genes in different cultivated and wild rice genotypes for bacterial leaf blight (BLB) disease. We are looking for novel/superior alleles of important BLB R-genes and studying their expression pattern in BLB resistance germplasms. Understanding of functional differences among alleles will help in deciphering its structure and function and finally facilitate easy identification of superior alleles corresponding to avr gene. We are interested in the functional validation of these genes which would reveal the mechanisms of resistance and support further exploitation to enhance the breadth of resistance in rice against bacterial blight.We are using genomics, proteomics and metabolomics approaches to understand the mechanism of disease. Our ultimate aim is to introduce the selected R-genes into the most popular cultivated variety(ies) of rice and in crop improvement program at global level.
Apart from rice functional genomics, my research group is also working on Isolation, characterization and understanding of bioactive compounds from Rice bran for their therapeutic properties with special reference to anticancer activities.
