Prof. Avery August Professor of Immunology and Chair of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Cornell University in Ithaca received his PhD from Cornell University and performed post-doctoral work at the Rockefeller University. After a brief stint in industry at the R.W. Johnson Pharmaceutical research Institute as a Scientist in Drug Discovery, he moved to The Pennsylvania State University as an Assistant Professor of Immunology where he rose through the ranks to attain tenure, and become Distinguished Professor of Immunology, and Director of the Center for Molecular Immunology and Infectious Disease. His laboratory has made significant contributions to the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of T cell development and differentiation, mast cell activation, and eosinophil function, as well as in the development of the immune response in general. His work on molecular mechanisms of T cell activation and the role of Tec kinases in this process has made its way into contemporary immunology textbooks. He has published >100 research papers in this area in journals such as Journal of Immunology, Blood, Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, Science Signaling, Journal of Experimental Medicine, and Immunity. His work has been funded by >15 million dollars from a variety of federal, private and industry sources.
